Compensation for Plastic Surgeons Rebounds in 2022 After Pandemic-related Decline

Average income for plastic surgeons increased in 2022 over previous years, according to a physician compensation report from MedScape. This is a welcomed uptick in income for many surgeons, following the negative impact of pandemic-related shutdowns in 2020-2021.

“It’s a very positive trend to see surgeons’ incomes returning to pre-pandemic levels, and in some cases, even exceeding them,” said Steve Look, Principal and founder of Paradigm Search Group, a national consulting firm that specializes in recruitment and practice solutions for plastic surgery groups.

Plastic surgeons were among the highest earning specialties, with an average annual income of $576,000, according to the MedScape survey of more than 13,000 physicians. Average 2022 income for plastic surgeons represented a ten percent increase over the previous year.

“The MedScape data reveals some very promising trends, with compensation increases reflecting the post-COVID aesthetic surgery boom many of our clients experienced in 2022,” Look said. “In addition to these positive trends in their compensation, plastic surgeons also rank among the most satisfied with their career and specialty. Continued growth in this segment is driving increasing demand among clients across the country, setting the stage for a strong year for 2023.”
